exerted against members of the clan to conform was much more
effective as a result of physical proximity. The frequent encounters
resulting from _ such proximity obviously reinforced the group’s
identity as it set them apart from other spatial/kinship groups.
In the following I examine how the social functions of the harat
were reflected spatially in the formation and lay-out of the
different living quarters.
