This study benefitted from the support of several people. First, I owe a debt
of gratitude to my committee chair, Dr. Peter Philips, whose focused comments
were most useful. Dr. Philips’s willingness to work with me after my long hiatus
is greatly appreciated. However, I am most grateful for the strength and
perseverance that he displayed in seeing that this study is completed during perhaps
the hardest time of his life, the loss of his dear son John.
I would also like to thank the other committee members for their comments
| and support: Drs. E. K. Hunt, Norman Waitzman, Cihan Bilginsoy, and Mark
Prus. Dr, E. K. Hunt’s critical perspective was always refreshing and I benefitted
considerably from his lectures and written work.
A special debt is owed to two other professors: Drs. Ernest Randa and Dr.
Gail Blattenberger. The many stimulating sessions with Dr. Ernest Randa in which
he shared his broad and deep knowledge of history and his insights into economic
