CHAPTER 1: AN OUTLINE OF EMPIRICISM AND POSITIVISM, THE
CONVENTIONALIST CRITIQUE AND A REALIST ALTERNATIVE

outward appearance and the essence of things
directly coincided." (1)
In this chapter I will attempt to outline and critique the
general features of the empiricist theory of knowledge (2)
and consider its most entrenched philosophical form: namely,
positivism. Where empiricism is paradigmatically inductive in
the form of its methodology, positivism constructs 4
logically deductive methodology from this basic premise. (3)
I will then present an outline of the main themes in the
conventionalist/rationalist critique of empiricism. Finally,
I will attempt to outline the main principles of a realist
alternative to the empiricist methodological position. This
final section will lay the methodological protocols for re-
interpreting a number of debates around "modes of production"
and the "articulation of modes of production" which
constitutes the basic theoretical and substantive kernel of
this thesis.
I. EMPIRICISM
The empiricist account of scientific knowledge has been the
prominent account since it was first articulated in the
we ltanschaung and popular ethos of the emergent
manufacturing-industrial bourgeoisie of seventeenth century
