I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those who helped
and supported me during the research and the writing of this thesis.
I am deeply grateful to those Palestinian rebels whose recollections
added a wealth of oral data and whose experiences and inside stories
made this research possible. I would also like to thank those British
officers of the Palestine Police who contributed their experiences and
recollection. In particular Edward Horne who helped me establish
contact with them.
Special thanks go to Sami Kaylani and Firyal Khalifa who helped
me in the difficult and painful task of transcribing the tapes.
I owe a lot to Ted Swedenburg for his company and discussions
during the research .
The research would have not been possible without the generous
help of al-Qattan family, Society of Arab Studies and SANAD
(Community Service in Palestine) whose financial contributions where
most appreciated.
I am grateful to the Hijazi family with whom I stayed during the
research in Galilee, and Bulus Hanna Bulus who helped me find my way
and my interviewees in the Galilee area.
To Dr. Uri Davis who supervised me during the research and Mr.
Michael Adams who supervised me during the first stage of writing.
Special thanks go to Prof. ’Aziz al--Azmeh, my supervisor who
patiently read the many drafts and who continuously advised and
